DIATOMACEOUS EARTH

Diatomaceous earth (DM) is made from fossilised shells called diatoms. These tiny hard shells are mined from the bottom of ancient waterways then crushed and used as a natural insecticide. The shell of the diatoms consists of mostly silica, when crushed the silica is, to a mite, like tiny glass shards which damage their outer skin causing them to dehydrate and perish. The particles are far too small to be harmful to larger organisms like humans.

APPLICATIONS:
Mites like to feed on hens when brooding and roosting therefore these areas are where mites mostly live and where diatomaceous earth is best applied.
- Nests: Remove all used bedding from the nesting boxes sprinkle diatomaceous earth on the surfaces then replace with fresh bedding, lightly sprinkle diatomaceous earth onto bedding and work in.
- Roosts: Dust on and around roosting areas
- Hens: Mites can be controlled by on chickens by dusting between the feathers and onto the skin.
- Dust Baths: Add a couple of tablespoons full of DM to the chicken’s dust bath/s this way they will apply the DM naturally.
Note: When handling diatomaceous earth avoid inhalation and contact with eyes
